Perez - Force India can be 'massive surprise' in 2019'

Having made his debut in 2011, Sergio Perez is now part of the old guard in Formula 1, with the sixth most Grand Prix starts of any driver on the current grid. And over the last five seasons, he’s become a major player at Force India – but could his standing at the team change when Lance Stroll arrives next year? The Mexican doesn’t think so…

Force India went into administration at the end of July, with Lawrence Stroll – father of Williams driver Lance - stepping in as the leader of a consortium of investors to rescue the squad, and they began their new era at the Belgian Grand Prix in August.

Ever since that takeover was completed, it was widely expected that Stroll would join the Silverstone squad – and now with Perez recently signing a new contract with the team, the Canadian youngster seems nailed on to take Esteban Ocon’s seat for 2019.

And Perez isn’t concerned about the son of the team’s new owner joining him next year – perhaps the opposite in fact, with the Mexican optimistic that they can both contribute and help the team ‘be a massive surprise next year’.

When asked if Lance Stroll joining Force India will affect the team dynamic, Perez replied: “I don’t think it will change. At the end of the day, the interests of all the team, even the team buyer, the team owner is that the team is very successful.

“So, for that you need both cars to be at 100 per cent and for the team to develop as quickly as possible. So, for that you really need full performance.

“I think if that happens, he’s coming in to a great team with great people, engineers, where he’s going to grow a lot. I see great things for the team.

“We have all the guidance, we just need the budget and I think we can be a massive surprise next year.”

Perez’s future at Force India has been a much talked about topic in the paddock in recent months, but his new contract was agreed earlier this month – and Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer has revealed what the driver brings to the team.

“Well, we chose to re-sign him because he’s a fantastic driver. He’s great on Sunday, qualifies well, great feedback and he’s been with the team for quite some time,” said Szafnauer.

“I think it’s appropriate to discuss all this here at his home race and he’s got a big impact on the team and it’s good to have continuity as well, from one year to the next.

“The regulations are changing quite significantly next year and a fellow like Sergio with all of his experience will help us in driving the development forward next year.”

Before Perez turns his attention to next year, though, there’s still two races of this season remaining. And he’s still in with a chance of securing ‘best of rest’ for a third successive season: he currently trails Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg in P7 by 12 points.

Discorso inverso rispetto a Hülkenberg: per quanto riguarda Pérez, il vantaggio finale sul compagno di squadra mi sembra eccessivo.

Mi è sembrata grossomodo la solita stagione di Pérez. Un po' di altalena, spesso coincidente con quella della sua vettura: quando va bene va forte, quando va male scompare o quasi. Rimane un pilota che capitalizza al massimo ogni singola occasione che gli si presenta e, a questo proposito, Baku ne è un fulgido esempio. Unico podio stagionale per un pilota non appartenente ai tre top team.

Piuttosto negativo il suo comportamento a Singapore, dove ha sfoderato nuovamente il vecchio Pérez falloso e anche un poco irritante.

Per l'anno prossimo, si preannuncia un confronto piuttosto comodo con Stroll.

Pérez è uno dei piloti che meglio si adatta a questa Formula 1 così strategia-centrica. Sempre nel posto giusto al momento giusto, una visione di gara con pochi eguali e anche qualche colpo di fortuna che non guasta mai. Ecco servita una macchina da punti.

Non è un pilota da prestazione pura e sinceramente non catturerà mai la mia attenzione più di tanto, ma se un team tutto sommato piccolo come Racing Point si permette di sottoporre un triennale a questo pilota c'è anche un motivo. Ed è quello che ho enunciato sopra.

Il confronto con Stroll, come ho scritto l'anno scorso, si preannunciava comodo e così è stato. Due categorie differenti.

Per quanto continui a non farmi impazzire, ma sarebbe così anche se dovesse vincere 100 gare, sarebbe un peccato non rivederlo nel 2021.

Sicuramente la sua miglior stagione in Formula 1, grazie anche ad una vettura ottima, vista la base (e anche qualcosa in più) di partenza. Riesce sempre a trovarsi nella posizione giusta e anche in una gara iniziata con un incidente alla quarta curva non puoi mai tagliarlo fuori perché in qualche modo risalirà, vuoi per episodi fortunati o per strategie particolarmente azzeccate.

Non so quanto possa reggere un confronto con Verstappen in Red Bull, per me poco poco, però obiettivamente è un pilota che la Formula 1 (questa Formula 1 soprattutto) la merita eccome.

"Dopo Miami, le cose sono peggiorate per me. Mi sentivo come se stessi guidando un'altra macchina che non si adattava bene alle mie esigenze. 

Di conseguenza, non è stato possibile entrare in Q3 diverse volte, il che ha mandato in frantumi la mia fiducia. Questo ha reso anche la guida molto più difficile.

Ho avuto molti problemi in estate. Guidavo senza alcuna fiducia. A un certo punto non riuscivo proprio a capire, è stata molto dura. 

La Formula 1 è il mio sport, la mia vita, la mia passione. Ma quando si attraversa un periodo così difficile al lavoro, è difficile essere allegri a casa con moglie e figli. Ecco perché ho assunto un mental coach perché la mia famiglia merita avere un papà allegro a casa. Insieme al mio allenatore ho iniziato a lavorare per diventare la migliore versione di me stesso a casa, ma anche come pilota. Ho deciso di non mollare. Nel frattempo ho continuato a lavorare duro anche con gli ingegneri per risolvere almeno alcuni problemi. Di conseguenza, cerco di ritrovare la positività. 

Ora ho 33 anni, ma sto ancora imparando ogni giorno. In pista, ma sicuramente anche fuori. Anche per questo, non ne avrò mai abbastanza della Formula 1. È davvero sorprendente quello che questo sport mi dà ancora.

Sono grato alla Red Bull per avermi dato l'opportunità di correre in un top team. Sarebbe bellissimo se potessi concludere la mia carriera qui. Ma essere un pilota per questo team non è facile. La Red Bull Racing opera in modo diverso rispetto alla maggior parte dei team. 

Ma è anche per questo che hanno così tanto successo. Secondo me, la loro macchina è costruita con un approccio diverso rispetto agli altri team. Ha bisogno di tempo e devi abituarti a questo. E ovviamente devi avere a che fare con Max Verstappen come compagno di squadra".
