Jacques Villeneuve “It was just bad luck.... He has spent his life living on the edge without getting hurt apart from Silverstone when he broke his leg. He took huge risks in motorbikes and actually broke his neck on one. That’s just the way he was living. When it happens in racing it’s somehow acceptable but when it happens outside racing, suddenly it’s terrible. But really it’s terrible anywhere. It’s freakish because he wasn’t even going at speed. He was going slow. It was just bad luck. That shows you that it doesn’t matter what you do, when you’re unlucky there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s terrible but terrible mostly for his family who are just waiting. I skied all my life and did stupid things and got hurt a little bit but I was always lucky. I knocked myself out once. Once you’ve skied you know when to go and when not to go. But even then you get caught out. Now, because of that, I only ski the mountains I know. I got caught out and the best skiers in the world get caught out. The best racing drivers in the world get caught out on the road and that’s nature. There’s nothing you can do about it. You play with luck all your life and you hope it won’t catch you out and when it does you hope it won’t be terrible but Michael has been as unlucky as you can be and it’s very sad.†He’s always been a tough beast and that’s just bad luck. You can’t stop people skiing [because of these accidents] and regulate it by creating special licences ? You can’t do that. “Of course I wish him the best. There’s never been animosity where we’d wish ill to each other. There was always tremendous respect. More than him it’s the family that I feel for right now.â€
