Luke36
"I certainly had an appreciation of the danger which to me was part of the pleasure of racing. To me now racing is – the dangers are taken away: if it's difficult, they put in a chicane. So really now the danger is minimal – which is good, because people aren't hurt. But for me the fact that I had danger on my shoulder made it much more exciting. It's rather like if you flirt with a girl, it's more exciting than paying for a prostitute, because while you know you're gonna get it, the other one you don't. And I think with driving a motor car, the danger is a very necessary ingredient. Like if you're cooking, you need salt. You can cook without salt, but it doesn't have the flavour. It's the same with motor racing without danger. For me."
"I think part of the attraction of motor racing was the danger. That was part of the reason you wanted to do it."

His Formula 1 greatness however, cannot be doubted and the sole reason he lost out to Mike Hawthorn by a single point in the 1958 season, was his overwhelming sense of fair-play. Moss believed that the manner in which the battle was fought was as important, if not more important than the outcome of the battle. So when in the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix, his arch rival Mike Hawthorn was threatened with a heavy penalty, Moss went out of his way to defend him. Stirling Moss, after winning the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix What had happened on track was a rather interesting incident - Hawthorn's Ferrari had stalled on a particularly steep portion of the track. Moss, as he went past his stationary countryman had the grace to shout out a word of advice - that he should probably steer downhill, against the traffic and try to bump-start the car - and then turn around the continue the race. Hawthorn paid heed and steered the car as instructed by Moss, and then started it again and finished in second place behind Moss. The stewards looked at the incident as a violation of racing regulations, but Moss was himself vocal about defending Hawthorn. In the end, Hawthorn was allowed to keep his 7 points. Mike Hawthorn wrapped up the 1958 season with 42 points becoming the first British world champion in history, and Moss finished second in the championship with 41. Sir Stirling Moss thus entered the record books as "the greatest driver to never win a world championship". leopnd
