Primo giro di Elford a Le Mans 1969: "We both made a good start. Rolf was off first and i was right behind him, except i had a problem. On the 917 the dorr used to open upwards and normally we woukd just let it go and it would slam itself shut, which i did as i got in and turned the engine on, exceot it didn't shut properly. And i suppose it wouldn't really have mattered, but on the first lap we were all supposed to have a Commisaire standing beside thecar to make sure we all put our seat bekts on - what a joke! So, although the seat belt Commisaire was looking,he couldn't see into the car really, so e all made a show of it and took off, and on the way down the Mulsanne Straight on the first lap i was steering with my knees while i put the belt on, and i'm sure i wasn't alone, everybody was doing the same thing. Then i turned my attention to the door that hadn't closed properly, but the car was abit of a monster that year so the only time i had anything like a free hand was on the Mulsanne Straight, but then the air pressure was such that i couldn't get the door open. So on the two straights that mattered, i was steering with one hand and trying to push the door open with my other hand to get it to slam again, but i couldn't get it opoen, so after five laps i had to come in and get the mechanics to close the door for me."

"The car was very unstable because we were in the realms of where we had never been before. Nobody had never been over abouth 200 mph and suddenly the monster was doing 220 mph, but it wandered all over the road doing it. I am sure pretty well everybody at one point had come across the 917 and was frightened silly by it. And itwasn't a bad thing because we found that when we came down the Esses, through Tertre Rouge on the straight, everybody else was queued up on the right and they waited until we had gone by. That carried on pretty well all the time, except at one point in the middle of the night i ame round Tertre Rouge and started accelerating down the straight. And there i was doing 220 mph and there were a couple of 911s on the right side, and the guy at the back obviously didn't realise that a 917 was coming, and about half way down the steaight decided he would start to overtake the car in front of him. Well, i as doing 220 mph and they were both probably doing about 160, so it would have taken forever to pass a similar car and there was no question of stopping. So i had to go by with two wheels on the grass and two wheels on what was left on the road. So realky that was the only problem, until thewe bell-housing and clucth problem in the morning, whic was a shame."

Ferrari a Le Mans?

Fino a poco tempo fa era a inviti.

- Squadre selezionate dall'American Le Mans Series
