The new definitive  871  emerged  at  imola, noted fo its  tall (and trend-setting) airbox ,longer  wheel base and enlarged fuel capacity relative to the 87p. As cosworth  was over committed on engine  production  and DFZs  were scarce, March even running a 3.3 litre Dfl ,

sports car V8 at spa. Even  Capelli  led the 'atmo' class there until the engine's oil pressure sagged. The 87 had non - started at Rio.

The March 871 used a DFZ engine, an upgrade from the DFY (naturally aspirated) 3.5 litre introduced in 1987 and had been dominated peaked out 565 bhp at 10,500 rpm other teams used DFZs Ags, coloni, larrouse, tyrrell. The (turbos) were restricted to 4-bar boost  pop of valves . This is a shot of March with DFZ engine.
