At the end of the first lap of the South African Modified V8 Championship race held at Killarney on 20 February 1989, Ian Scheckter's Ford Sapphire Cosworth tangled with the Nissan Skyline of former South African Rally Champion Hannes Grobler at the left-hand kink before the start/finish line, veered to the right and hit the pitlane entrance wall. The cars hit the barrier which seperated the pitlane from the pit straight, being catapulted into the pitlane, with Scheckter's vehicle flying high into the air and bursting into flames. The accident resulted in the deaths of two men.

John Rittmann, a twenty-six-year-old computer programmer from Pinelands, Cape Town, who was photographing the race standing next to the pitwall suffered massive head injuries and died on the spot; Adrian Mays, a business man also from Pinelands, Cape Town, operating as a crew member of a competing team was hit, dying in hospital later that evening. Many others were injured, while Scheckter and Grobler walked away shaken but otherwise unhurt. Possibly the front suspension on Scheckter's car which according to a source failed just before the accident, could have been the cause of the crash.

The next lap only Sarel van der Merwe who led the race in a Audi Quattro Turbo V8, passed at slow speed and the event was stopped. Ian Scheckter never raced again following this accident.

It was the debut of the Ford Sapphire Cosworth, built for the 1989 Wesbank Modified series, and also the return to racing for Ian Scheckter, who had abandoned for several time after sharing Sarel van der Merwe's Kreepy Krauly March 83G in the American IMSA series during the 80s.

Una delle troppe costole in cui si è divisa la Historic F1 da quando è stata presa sotto l'ala dalla FIA. Qui corrono insieme F1 più o meno recenti, GP2, WSR3.5, F.Indy, ecc.

Gentlemen 50enni che guidano Formula 1 di 1000 cavalli, non c'è molto di cui sorprendersi. Ci sono quelli con esperienza che magari vanno pure forte e altri che cercano di sorpassare sull'erba al Serraglio

Quest'anno anche il buon Coloni si è affidato a questi signori, meglio di così

Klaas Zwart, il proprietario dell'Ascari Resort e (tra le tante) di una Jaguar R5, ne ha 65.

E lui è uno di quelli più veloci e con più esperienza, perché ha corso anche a Le Mans e nell'ETCC. Ma ce ne sono anche altri che hanno solamente abbastanza soldi per sfasciare e riaggiustare il proprio giocattolo più e più volte

sarebbe interessante... cmq Zwart a monza con la Jaguar R5 ha fatto la pole con solo due secondi in piu' rispetto al tempo delle Marussia nel 2015

Due anni fa picchiò in qualifica alla Variante Alta e voleva che gli trovassi un puntone di ricambio al volo

Poi mi dissero che si servivano direttamente alla Red Bull.

terribile incidente oggi pomeriggio in gara 3 della F4 inglese a Donnington.

la dinamica evoca tragici ricordi del passato.

oltre 2 ore per estrarre il pilota e fin'ora non si hanno notizie o bollettini ufficiali. nella migliore delle ipotesi ci sono gravissimi danni alle gambe del povero Billy Monger
