Giacomo Caliri built the prototype model M184 with Alfa Romeo turbo engine. But when Carlo Chiti left Alfa Romeo and found Motori Moderni, the team decided to change the engine supplier to Motori Moderni. The first M185 chassis was modified to accept a Ford Cosworth DFY engine through the use of a spacer between the engine and gearbox. The difference was also in the rear end of sidepods.
