Sainz potrebbe rimpiazzare Kobayashi ad Hockenheim

According to El Mundo Deportivo, it is a very real “possibility”, following talks between Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko, Sainz’s father Carlos Sainz, and new Caterham ‘advisor’ Colin Kolles.

Speculation says talks took place about forgiving Caterham’s outstanding gearbox bills to Red Bull if Sainz, the latest cream of the energy drink company’s junior programme, stepped in immediately to replace Kamui Kobayashi.

“Nothing is final, nor is it the only option,” the newspaper quoted a source close to 19-year-old Sainz.

“Currently, Carlos is focused on this weekend’s round of the Renault world series, and then we will talk and see.”

The Spanish sports daily AS admits that a Hockenheim debut for Sainz was initially a possibility, but a deal between Red Bull and Caterham was not agreed.

“So now the intention of Red Bull is that Sainz will step into the Toro Rosso on a Friday this year, and next year he will be a race driver,” the report said. (GMM)

Auto GP driver Kevin Giovesi has become the second addition to the Caterham Formula 1 team's new driver development programme.

The 20-year-old Italian joins GP2 driver Nathanael Berthon on the scheme.

Giovesi is fourth in the Auto GP standings at present in his second year in the series, having previously been a race winner in Italian Formula 3.

A Caterham statement said Berthon and Giovesi would get "the opportunity to embed themselves in the F1 team's operations at Leafield Technical Centre and on track, and to gain valuable experience of working with F1 engineers and current season".

Caterham's junior roster has undergone several changes since the F1 team was sold by its creator Tony Fernandes at the start of July, with long-time protege Alexander Rossi recently parting company with both the F1 operation and its GP2 arm, the latter of which is still owned by Fernandes.

Robin Frijns has continued as Caterham's official F1 reserve, while Formula Renault 3.5 race winner Will Stevens and Formula Renault 2.0 drivers Matt Parry and Seb Morris remain a part of the team's 'Racing Academy' at present.
